Since its release in 2006, the birth control medication Yaz has generated substantial interest, but also considerable controversy. Also released under the name Yasmin in 2001, Yaz is a contraceptive pill that utilizes the ingredient drospirenone, a synthetic progestin, to prevent pregnancy and was also approved by the FDA to treat certain kinds of acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). However, it has also been linked to a number of potentially deadly side effects in women.

Yaz quickly became incredibly popular in the United States, but in the process, exposed huge numbers of unsuspecting women to a variety of life-altering side effects. Sadly, many of these women are now experiencing crippling pain and suffering related to Yaz side effects, and are additionally burdened with the responsibility of paying for ongoing medical treatment. If you have experienced any side effects that you think could be connected to use of Yaz or Yasmin, you should not be forced to contend with these burdens on your own, especially since they could have been prevented in the first place.

Yaz, Yasmin, and Blood Clots

Since 2009, there have been five major studies done that have investigated the potential link between drospirenone-based birth control pills, such as Yaz and Yasmin, and serious blood clots. Since that time, only two studies have come out that have demonstrated no link between the two, and both were sponsored by the manufacturers of Yaz and Yasmin. After multiple studies were published in The British Medical Journal that indicated that women who used Yaz and Yasmin were 2 to 3 times more likely to experience serious blood clots than women who used birth control pills containing levonorgestrel, a different form of progestin, the FDA decided to launch an investigation into the safety of Yaz.

The FDA’s study found that women who took drospirenone-based contraceptives like Yaz and Yasmin were 1.5 times more likely to suffer a serious blood clot than women who took birth control medications with other active ingredients. As a response to these findings, the FDA subsequently voted in September of 2011 that Bayer Pharmaceuticals needed to update the warnings on Yaz to reflect the potential risks facing users of the medication.

Yaz and Yasmin Side Effects

While many women reported suffering serious blood clots in their arms and legs after taking Yaz and Yasmin, these are far from the only side effects that have been associated with these medications. Specifically, Yaz and Yasmin users have reported suffering from:

  • Blood Clots
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Heart Attack
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Hyperkalemia

Sadly, all of these side effects can have devastating effects on a person’s well-being, and in many instances, can be life-threatening. Additionally, the costs of treating any of these side effects can be incredibly expensive, leaving victims with overwhelming medical bills to deal with in addition to the side effects they are already battling. Many women in this position have chosen to file Yaz lawsuits against Bayer and other manufacturers in order to pursue both financial compensation and justice for their undue and preventable suffering.

If you have suffered any of the above side effects after taking Yaz, Yasmin, or another drospirenone-based birth control, you too may be eligible to file a Yaz lawsuit. However, there is only a limited amount of time available in which individuals can file a lawsuit.

Do not miss out on your opportunity to take legal action against Bayer.
